1999 Santa Cruz County Waste Characterization
Food waste and other organic materials make up a large percentage of the waste stream. Methods for keeping those materials out of the waste stream are an important part of the County’s strategy to reach a goal of 75 percent diversion by 2010.
Food scraps, soiled paper, manure and other organic materials brought in by approved private haulers and collected through the Compost Collection Program are composted in an enclosed system at the County’s Buena Vista Landfill. Yard trimmings and wood waste are used to create mulch products at the Buena Vista Landfill and the Ben Lomond Transfer Station. Vision Recycling processes the materials into a variety of products.
