What
is a Master Composter?
A Master Composter is a volunteer, trained to teach
others about composting. Master Composters
have completed the Master Composter Training Program,
a two month program covering:
- Compost science
- Backyard and worm composting
- Horticultural Uses of Compost
- Outreach and presentation skills
- County of Santa Cruz solid waste reduction goals
Master Composters are the volunteer
backbone of Santa Cruz County’s Home Composting Program. Master Composters
teach people the basics of home composting and inspire
Santa Cruz County residents to recycle their yard and
kitchen waste at home, work, and school through composting
information booths and workshops. We encourage
adults of all ages, abilities and ethnic groups to apply!
Classes meet on seven weekday nights, plus five Saturday field trips in February and March. The 2009 Master Composter Training Program application and course agenda wil be posted in November of 2008. Sign up to receive information a 2009 Master Composter Training application and course agenda.
The Master Composter Training Program is free to residents of Scotts Valley and the unincorporated areas of Santa Cruz County (including Aptos, Boulder Creek, Ben Lomond, Bonny Doon, Corralitos, Davenport, Felton, Freedom, La Selva Beach, Live Oak, and Soquel). Residents of the cities of Santa Cruz, Capitola, and Watsonville can attend on a space available basis and are required to pay a $150.00 materials fee, due by the first day of class, because the cities do not financially support the program.
In exchange Master Composter
Volunteers are asked to volunteer at 6 events to perform
composting education and outreach in Santa Cruz County
within one year of graduation.The Home Composting Program schedules information booths and workshops at a wide range of fun venues including local farmers markets, compost demonstration areas, regional parks and harvest festivals.
